Completing position-specific training is one of the best ways to start strong as a leader or refresh with the latest information. These courses are designed to help Scouters learn how to confidently and effectively carry out their Scouting roles. We encourage in-person training at our instructor-led courses when available, but most content can also be accessed 24/7 at My.Scouting.
Completing these initial courses will designate a Scouter as “trained” for their registered role. We highly encourage doing so within the first 90 days of joining.
All registered leaders must maintain current Safeguarding Youth certification, and direct-contact leaders must also maintain Hazardous Weather Training.
Training for Cubmasters & Assistant Cubmasters and Den Leaders & Assistant Den Leaders consists of two courses: Position-Specific Training and Hazardous Weather Training.
Training for the Pack committee chair and members consists only of Position-Specific Training.
Safeguarding Youth is required for all volunteers prior to registration and must be renewed annually.
Cub Leader training covers core principles and methods of Cub Scouts; Childhood development; Pack structure and roles; Engaging and involving adults; Advancement and uniform; Preparing for safe, outdoor adventures.
Hazardous Weather Training covers how to assess risks, make informed decisions, and respond effectively to severe weather events. This certification is valid for two years.
This course is for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. It consists of an online pre-requisite course in addition to an overnight, practical session. BALOO covers Cub Scout camping policies and provides the necessary skills to help units carry out a safe, successful and fun camping experience.

IOLS prepares Scouts BSA leaders for guiding youth through rank requirements up to First Class. This practical weekend course covers campsite selection and setup, menu planning, outdoor cooking, knots, map and compass navigation, hiking, first aid, outdoor ethics, campfire program, and more.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank. Fifth grade Webelos leaders are encourage to take this course.
Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. All adults involved in Venturing are required to take Safeguarding Youth Training each year. in addition, Crew Advisors, Associate Advisors and Crew Committee members should complete position-specific training.

In addition, Sea Scout adult leaders must complete Youth Protection Training every two years.
