Elmwood Park youngster's backpack program wins special notice

An Elmwood Park youth's project to bring school supplies to an impoverished Kentucky community has won special notice.

For the past five years, Magnus Shipinski, 12, a seventh-grader at Elm Middle School, has worked with a nonprofit group out of Bellwood called Kentucky Mountain Kids Inc., which provides charitable assistance for children in Rattlesnake Ridge, Ky.

Barrington area parents compete in Pinewood Derby races alongside Cub Scout Pack 229 kids

For the first time, the fathers of Cub Scout Pack 229 in North Barrington found themselves competing in the annual Pinewood Derby races alongside their kids.

For the competition this year, fathers of the scouts crafted wood cars from scratch and raced them down a four-lane track Sunday at North Barrington Elementary School, 24175 N. Grandview Drive.

The need for speed was fast tracked on Tuesday in Glenview at the Cub Scout Pack 154 Pinewood Derby at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church.
"The kids are just having a good time," said the pack's Cubmaster, Tim Rueckert.

"We're (the boys) not playing Xbox, we're not sitting in a house, alone, by ourselves, pushing buttons," Rueckert said. "We're playing a game amongst all of their friends and buddies and they're having a great time. It's old school fun."
